GreatWorks' shows are all either literature or social studies based. While some of the shows are designed to work with general audiences (see our Show Picker page for more details), most of our shows are designed for specific grades/ages, and written with the vocabularies and intellectual sophistication of each group in mind.
If there's a unifying aspect to our work, it's the belief that the way to maximize our impact is treat each of your students as if they're the smartest kid in class. We don't do "children's theatre" - we do shows that are designed to make your kids feel like their taste, their sense of humor, and their intelligence are being respected and challenged throughout, recognizing that young audiences today have already been exposed to more sophisticated ideas and narratives than many of us were back in our day.
We tour throughout the Illinois and Wisconsin markets, playing a wide range of schools in dozens of communities. We're particularly proud of the fact that of the 100 highest ranked Chicago-area elementary and middle schools in the Sun-Times ranking system, many of them are regular GreatWorks customers, finding our fun, challenging approach to be a good fit with their own high educational standards.
The actors and directors of our shows can also be seen working at some of the largest professional theatres in the city, bringing the same dedication and professionalism to your school as they do to their "night jobs."
At right are the core group of performers who'll be appearing during our 2012-2013 season. While we don't employ a formal acting ensemble, we do try to work with a select group of performers who understand the performance philosophy at GreatWorks and are happy to bring their professional theatre experience to some of the youngest audiences in the area.
Starting in 2013, GreatWorks will be expanding to include a sister company, Foxrock Theatricals. Foxrock will tour Irish Repertory/Splinter Group's acclaimed Samuel Beckett productions to universities and civic centers, giving us a range of productions suitable for many different programming needs.
