I'm Jorge Peña, Lipan Apache. My Indian name, which was given to me in Lakota, is wamblee ho’ka waste (Good Singer Eagle). My ancestral grandfathers are Chief Poca Ropa (Few Clothes) of the Lipan Apache and Young Man Afraid of His Horses of the Oglala Lakota Nation.  I was raised by my grandmother, Aurora of the Heron, granddaughter to Chief Poca Ropa of the Four Bears Clan. She taught me the stories of the old Lipan Apache, stories that include the creation of our people. Today the closest living relative I have is Jerome Kills Small a direct descendant of Red Star, a great uncle who guided and taught me the Lakota songs and stories of old.

I tell the story of the trickster, Iktomi, as taught to me by my uncle Jerome Kills Small. I act out the story to make up for the expletives that are lost in telling a trickster story in English. Such expletives are random sounds made to forecast the content of a sentence.

I also tell the stories of the animals and what their rightful place is among the two-legged people. I show respect for animals, plants and especially for the people. I sing songs with my drum representing the heartbeat of all living beings.

There is no greater gift to the world than leaving these stories for future generations. Therefore, when asked, I will continue to bring the stories and the songs of both the Lakota and Lipan Apache people, to the people.
